Welcome to Playa Junquillal
Playa Junquillal is one of the last unspoiled beaches on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. Located in the Guanacaste province, this 3-kilometer stretch of golden sand remains blissfully free from the crowds and over-development that have transformed other popular beach towns.
For guests staying at luxury villas in the area, Junquillal offers the perfect balance: peaceful seclusion with easy access to a wide range of activities and experiences.
Beach Activities
Surfing
Junquillal offers consistent surf breaks suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers. The beach break produces fun, manageable waves most of the year. For more experienced surfers, nearby Playa Negra (10 minutes) and Playa Avellanas (25 minutes) offer world-class reef breaks.
Swimming
The beach has calm swimming areas, particularly at low tide. The water is warm year-round (26-29 degrees Celsius), and the gradual slope makes it suitable for families. Always check local conditions, as some areas can have currents during high tide.
Sunset Watching
Junquillal faces directly west, making it one of the best sunset-watching spots on the entire Pacific coast. The unobstructed ocean horizon creates spectacular displays of color every evening. Bring a drink, set up on the beach, and enjoy the show.
Beach Walking and Shell Collecting
With nearly 3 kilometers of coastline, Junquillal is perfect for long beach walks. At low tide, the exposed tide pools reveal a fascinating world of marine life. Shell collectors will find treasures scattered along the sand.
Nature and Wildlife
Turtle Nesting
Playa Junquillal is an important nesting site for olive ridley sea turtles. During nesting season (August through December), you can witness the incredible sight of turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. Guided night tours are available through local conservation groups, and turtle release experiences are unforgettable for both adults and children.
Mangrove Kayaking
The nearby mangrove estuaries offer peaceful kayaking through lush canals teeming with wildlife. You'll spot birds, iguanas, monkeys, and possibly even crocodiles as you paddle through these protected ecosystems. Tours depart from nearby Playa Tamarindo and Puerto Viejo.
Birdwatching
Guanacaste is home to hundreds of bird species. The dry tropical forest surrounding Junquillal attracts parrots, toucans, scarlet macaws, and dozens of other species. Early morning is the best time for birdwatching from the comfort of your villa's garden.
Wildlife Reserves
The Santa Rosa National Park and the Palo Verde National Park are both within day-trip distance. These protected areas offer hiking trails through tropical dry forest, with opportunities to see howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, coatis, and a remarkable variety of birds.
Adventure Activities
Zip Lining (Canopy Tours)
Several canopy tour operators near Tamarindo and the Guanacaste highlands offer thrilling zip line experiences through the forest canopy. Fly between platforms high above the treetops for unforgettable views of the jungle and, in some cases, the ocean.
Horseback Riding
Beach horseback riding is a quintessential Costa Rica experience. Several operators offer guided rides along Junquillal beach at sunset. Multi-hour tours through the countryside and river crossings are also available.
Sport Fishing
The waters off Guanacaste offer excellent sport fishing year-round. You can charter boats out of Tamarindo or Flamingo for half-day or full-day trips targeting marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, and roosterfish.
Snorkeling and Diving
While Junquillal itself isn't known for snorkeling, the nearby Catalina Islands (accessible from Flamingo or Tamarindo) are one of Costa Rica's premier dive sites, with manta rays, reef sharks, and incredible coral formations.
Wellness and Relaxation
Yoga
The peaceful atmosphere of Junquillal makes it ideal for yoga practice. Many luxury villas in the area, including Odisea Retreats, have dedicated yoga spaces. Private yoga instructors can be arranged for individual or group sessions.
Massage and Spa
In-villa massage and spa services can be arranged through your concierge. Professional therapists bring all equipment to you, creating a private spa experience in the comfort of your villa.
Dining and Nightlife
Local Restaurants
While Junquillal is a small community, there are several excellent restaurants within a short drive. Fresh seafood, traditional Costa Rican cuisine (casados, gallo pinto, ceviche), and international options are all available.
Private Chef Experience
For the ultimate dining experience, many luxury villas offer private chef services. A personal chef prepares gourmet meals using the freshest local ingredients, served in the stunning setting of your villa's dining area or poolside. This is particularly popular for groups and special occasions.
Tamarindo
The bustling beach town of Tamarindo is about 40 minutes south and offers a wide range of restaurants, bars, shops, and nightlife. It's the perfect destination for an evening out if you crave more social energy.
Day Trips
Rincón de la Vieja Volcano
About 2 hours from Junquillal, this active volcano offers hiking through otherworldly landscapes of mud pots, hot springs, and volcanic craters. The surrounding national park is rich in wildlife and waterfalls.
Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs
A longer day trip (about 3.5 hours each way), but the volcanic hot springs and lush cloud forest of Arenal are worth the journey. Many operators offer combined tours with zip lines, hanging bridges, and thermal springs.
Liberia
The provincial capital offers a taste of authentic Costa Rican city life, with its charming colonial center, local markets, and traditional restaurants. It's also where Guanacaste's international airport is located.
